Can a reel mower be repaired instead of replaced?
Often, yes. Traditional reel mowers contain serviceable mechanical components, and poor performance may be corrected through adjustment, sharpening, maintenance, or replacement of individual worn parts.
One advantage of a traditional mechanical reel mower is that many components can be maintained or replaced rather than requiring replacement of the entire mower.
Cottage Craft Works currently supports multiple reel mower lines with replacement parts and sharpening equipment. The US Clipper, Silver Pro, and the Mascot mowers were patterned from the vintage Scotts Silent Night Mowers and have parts that will interchange. Agri Fab made the Mascot mowers for several years, so many Mascot parts will fit Agri Fab mowers. Agri Fab also made mowers for Sears and several other companies. So if your parts manual matches the Mascot parts diagrams, then the parts are probably interchangeable.
Repair Rather Than Replace
A heavy-duty reel mower is a mechanical machine.
Poor cutting performance doesn't automatically mean the mower is worn out.
It may simply require cleaning, adjustment, honing, or replacement of a worn component.
Start With the Symptom
Before ordering parts, determine what is wrong.
Does the reel turn?
Do both wheels operate?
Does it cut paper across the width?
Is the bed knife damaged?
Is a roller worn?
Did the mower strike a hard object?
Cutting Components
The reel and bed knife work together.
When evaluating replacement, consider the condition and alignment of both rather than treating either in isolation.
Drive Components
Push and ground-driven reel mowers depend upon their wheel-drive mechanisms.
If the wheels move but the reel doesn't operate properly, inspect the relevant gears, pawls, shafts, and related drive components for that model. The pawl may be worn or sheared off. It is the slender metal part that fits through the reel shaft under the pinion gear that provides the catch-and-release ratchet action when the mower is pushed forward or pulled backward. Wheels and Rollers
Worn wheels or rollers can affect mower operation and cutting geometry.
Identify the mower brand, model, width, and component dimensions before ordering.
Gang Mower Parts
A gang mower adds frame and towing components:
Tow bars.
Hitch pins.
Outriggers.
Lift-frame components.
Winch or lever hardware.
Individual reel heads.
Determine whether the problem is with the cutting head or the gang frame before ordering.

When Professional Service Makes Sense
Severe reel damage, major misalignment, or cutting surfaces requiring precision grinding may justify professional reel-mower service.
