The Featherweight table can also be ordered for the 301 long- or short-bed machines. Then you can use a 221 or a short-bed 301 in a long-bed table by simply sliding them to the left. The cutout for the 221-size machine measures 15-1/2 "long and 7-3/8" wide, tapering to 7" wide over the last 4-1/2". The bobbin lid fits. This section is then extended to 16-1/2" to fit the 301 short bed, or to 19-1/2" for the 301 long bed, if ordered this way.
Both cutouts have a notch for the electrical plugs on either machine, including the 301 top and bottom plugs if equipped.
Customers have also told us they are using 222, 201, and 414G machines on their tables. Measure the machine's length to determine which model you need if using one of these machines. If you have a 222, please measure the height closely and let us know if we need to modify the table, as the 222 can measure as much as 1/2" taller than the 221. We can add 1/2" to the tray depth and then send you a 1/2 panel to use with your 221 or 222 machines. This modification will add $20.
When the table is made for the 301, it will not have a finger hole cut out, as on the 221, to lift for bobbin changes. This is not a problem, as the 301 has a finger hole in the bobbin cover. The 221 can also slide to the right for more access.
Use the drop-down menu under available options to select the table type you need. Select your largest machine. In other words, if you have a 221, select the 221. If you also want to use a 301 short or long bed in the same table, select either size. The 221 will then also work on the same 301 table.
The small Singer Featherweight 221 Sewing Machines were produced from the 1930s through the 1960s. They remain as popular today as in the early years, thanks to their portability.
The classic Featherweight folding table was designed for portability and remains a favorite among today’s quiltmakers, who set it up at home and at quilt shows to use their Featherweight machines.
It is also a popular choice for those living in small apartments, as it can be folded and stored in a closet or behind a door.
Our reproduction Featherweight table is Amish handcrafted in cherry, with a multi-layer 3/4" cabinet-grade plywood veneer top banded on the sides with solid 3/4" cherry hardwood. This construction will likely outlive the original Featherweight tables. To produce the 42” table, our Amish craftsman can only use two tabletops from one sheet of plywood, rather than three for the standard 30” table. Hence, the additional cost. In the long run, this extended width is well worth the extra cost.
Our table was designed from an original 30 x 30 Featherweight table. The extended table measures 42 x 30 x 27-1/4 tall.
We were a bit surprised by the original table weight and its popularity. When we took on this task, we expected to find a lightweight card table. After working with the original table, we understand it was built to withstand heavy use.
We have tried both American and European-made Featherweight 221 models in the table.
Please let us know if you have an early-1930s Featherweight model. These rare early featherweight machines used a slightly different bobbin winder than later models, as pictured.
We searched extensively for sturdy folding legs for the reproduction model and were not satisfied with the earlier prototypes using card table leg brackets. The table just had too much wobble for a sewing machine worktable.
We settled on heavy-duty metal folding table legs made for much larger game tables:
These legs have stabilizer angle brackets and a positive-lock system to keep them in place, much like the original legs.
We especially liked the heavy-duty corner brackets on the folding legs, which provide extra support at the corners.
These sturdy folding legs are a perfect match for our reproduction Featherweight table.
The legs are extremely sturdy with no wobble.
The original Featherweight tables included an insert that allowed the table to be used as an extra card table, which was popular at the time. For collectors, finding an original insert with matching serial numbers is a prized possession.
For a reproduction table to be used for sewing, we decided that some would prefer not to incur the extra cost for something they did not plan to use. With this in mind, we have made the insert an optional item that can be selected via the drop-down at the bottom of the page.
The insert is precision-cut to match the wood grain and minimize gaps, allowing the solid surface to be used for other applications.
The table shows UPS's dimensional weight. The actual table weight for transport is approximately 24 lbs.
