Description / Shaker Style Sewing Cabinet

Elevate your sewing room with the Shaker-Style Sewing Cabinet, a timeless fusion of classic design and functional woodworking. Meticulously handcrafted in the USA by Amish artisans, this solid-wood sewing cabinet offers durability and beauty that surpass those of standard machine tables and mass-market cabinets. Whether you’re a seasoned sewist or just setting up your creative space, this cabinet brings superior organization, thoughtful ergonomics, and premium craftsmanship to every stitch.

Amish Craftsmanship & Elegant Shaker Design

Rooted in the iconic Shaker aesthetic, this sewing machine cabinet features clean lines, dovetailed drawers, and a natural wood finish that complements modern, farmhouse, and traditional décor. Choose from a range of hardwood species like Red Oak, Brown Maple, Elm, Hickory, Hard Maple, or Cherry to complement your crafting environment. Each piece is built to stand the test of time — far beyond the look of typical particleboard or MDF sewing tables.

Space-Saving + Functional Workspace

Ideal for small sewing rooms, apartments, or senior living spaces, the Shaker-Style Sewing Cabinet stores your machine compactly and provides a whole work surface when opened. With a dimension of 39-1/4″ wide (folded) and 78-1/2″ open, it’s engineered to maximize utility without overwhelming your room. The integrated German-made airlift smoothly raises and lowers your machine, while the cabinet’s drawers and spool rack keep tools, threads, and notions neatly organized.

Built for Your Machine

This sewing cabinet accommodates most standard sewing machines up to 16-5/8″ wide and 7″ deep—from entry-level domestic machines to heavier models such as Juki, Brother, Janome, and Singer. Provide your machine’s make and model at checkout for a machine-specific acrylic template that ensures a perfect fit.

Custom Options for Better Flexibility

Make this cabinet uniquely yours with optional add-ons, such as a 24″ rear-flip-up work leaf for additional workspace or rolling casters for mobility. These enhancements turn your sewing cabinet into a versatile craft station that adapts to your workflow.

Why Choose This Over Other Sewing Cabinets?

  • Versus Folding Sewing Cabinets: Traditional folding cabinets may offer temporary workspace, but lack the solid wood construction and heirloom quality of this Shaker design.

  • Versus Cabinets with Lift: While some competitors sell lift-style sewing cabinets, the Shaker Style balances lift functionality with deep drawer storage and customizable wood finishes — perfect for sewists who want both organization and aesthetics. Cabinfield

This Shaker woodworking masterpiece blends form and function into a sewing cabinet that doesn’t just hold a machine — it enhances your entire creative space. Whether for daily use or as a future family heirloom, it’s a wise investment in quality, utility, and design.

Cabinet Dimensions

The Shaker Style cabinet is 39-1/4” Wide, folded, 78-1/2” Open x 20” Deep, and 30-3/8” tall.

The optional rolling casters will add 1” to the height, bringing it to 31-3/8”.

Sewing Machine and Insert Size

The Shaker Style Sewing Cabinet with a 10-7/8” x 19-5/8” insert is built to handle standard-sized sewing machines up to 16-5/8” Wide and 7” Deep, weighing up to 50 lbs.

When measuring the machine, include the spindle and any cords that will be in the machine when it is lowered into the cabinet. As a rule of thumb, add 3” to the length and depth of the machine for the template size. The best way to measure is to set the machine between two tall, fixed items, such as large books, and then measure across the top. Do not include detachable arms and parts that would not be lowered with the machine.

The cabinet includes the acrylic template custom-made to fit your machine. Please include the make and model of your machine in the comment box at checkout.

The sewing machine pushes down into the cabinet using a German-made airlift, allowing the top to be closed. When the doors are locked, this unit appears to be a sideboard or chest, blending with your décor and concealing clutter.

Construction

The Mission Style Sewing Cabinet uses solid hardwood on the tops, fronts, doors, and drawer fronts. Cabinet-grade veneer plywood is used on the sides and in the kneehole. The back will be Luan-type plywood, stained and sealed.

The cabinet features four high-quality, dovetail-joined drawers with full-extension slides. The inside of the drawer boxes are all equal in size and measure approximately 8” Wide x 15” Deep x 3-1/2” Tall. The cabinet also features a pull-out spool rack.

Cabinet doors feature high-quality hinges, and flip-out tops are equipped with snag-free, mortised hinges.

The cabinet is equipped with nylon-tipped adjustable glides that adjust from 5/16” to ½”. Rollers are optional: select using the drop-down boxes. Cords will slide under the edges of both the glides and rollers, so cord holes are not needed.

Time Frame

You should expect 3 to 6 months for your custom cabinet to be built and shipped. Since the pandemic and economic uncertainty, demand for home-based products has increased significantly. Our Amish builders are also experiencing the same supply chain and labor shortages as other industries. Each cabinet is handcrafted for quality, not for mass-production speed.

Payment Options

You can order online using a credit card, by a secure link invoice, or by mail with a check.

A word about pricing and shipping costs: We have seen a wide range of prices on Amish sewing cabinets over the years. The factors are the cabinet cost and the shipping and delivery cost. When comparing, look at both. Some will increase the price and offer free shipping, while others will lowball the price and charge by the mile, which may end up costing more to deliver than the cabinet price itself. We believe our flat-rate shipping is fair, and our cabinet prices are competitive when you factor in both the cabinet and delivery costs.

Cottage Craft Works has gained a respected reputation for quality sewing cabinets and was featured in the December/January 2015 issue of Vogue Patterns Magazine as a resource for Amish handcrafted sewing machine cabinets.

Shipping Options

You may pick up the cabinet in central Ohio. Select F.O.B. (freight on buyer) if you live close to Central Ohio and would like to pick up the cabinet at the Amish shop. Select a $450 shipping deposit for in-home delivery. We will notify you should there be an issue with delivery to your location.

In-Home Delivery

We use insured, professional blanket-wrapped Amish furniture haulers that cover 95% of the Continental US and offer inside delivery for only $450. The exception might be a remote location at the extreme tip of a state such as Michigan, Maine, or Florida, or in another area that is difficult to deliver to.

These companies make monthly runs with scheduled pickup dates. We coordinate with the cabinet builders around these pickup dates to ship your cabinet as soon as it is completed and ready for pickup by the hauling company.

The term "solid wood furniture" has evolved loosely over time. The term once referred to furniture made entirely from native solid hardwoods.

Today, some companies have expanded the term "marketing" to attract customers seeking quality furniture. They claim their furniture is made of solid wood, based solely on the technical properties of wood chips and fibers that still comprise the wood structure. This means their furniture may contain particleboard or MDF. The woods used in furniture; even high-end sewing cabinets most often use particleboard covered with a glued-on laminate. Particle board does not perform well in humid climates or on long cabinet tops, such as those for next-generation computerized sewing and embroidery cabinets. The product often swells or sags. Cabinet laminated edges are prone to snagging on fabrics and to chipping or peeling off, leaving the particleboard exposed and more susceptible to moisture absorption from the atmosphere.

While particleboard laminated boards are widely used in office furniture, cutting a 13” x 27” hole in the top of a sewing cabinet compromises the top's structural integrity, exposes the edges, and increases the risk of moisture absorption.

Amish furniture will never contain particleboard or MDF. The cabinet fronts and tops, including door and drawer fronts, will be made of premium solid hardwoods in high-wear areas. Cabinet-grade matching veneer plywood will be used on the sides and, for a sewing cabinet, on the inside of the kneehole sides. The back will be covered in the same plywood or a Luan-type plywood. Plywood is layered sheets of real hardwood laminated together, providing a more stabilized wood that doesn’t expand and crack like solid wood, while providing a stronger structural wood than a single wood sheet.

About the Builder

Our builder learned his craft from accomplished Amish cabinetmakers who have passed down old-world craftsmanship from generation to generation. He has been building cabinets since 2002 and, in 2010, started his own custom cabinet business. In 2014, his unique cabinet design and craftsmanship enabled solid growth, prompting him to expand to a new 50’ x 80’ shop.  In 2018, he developed a complete in-house finish shop focused on custom furniture manufacturing. Unlike other shops that send their cabinets to other Amish finish shops, this builder can build and finish on the same property, controlling the entire process from start to finish and ensuring they are ready for shipping.
