J&P Coats Reproduction Thread Spool Cabinet
This is our extremely popular reproduction of the famous classic J & P Coats thread spool cabinets used in the general dry goods stores during the late 1800s and early 1900s.
Sewing thread and sewing notions would be displayed in these beautiful countertop cabinets. The cabinets were manufactured in furniture factories using the same mortise-and-tenon and reverse-side-panel construction as furniture produced at the time.
Thread companies would provide these cabinets, mostly free, to stores that sold their threads and sewing items. Traveling salesmen would make frequent visits to restock the cupboards. The original cabinets have become high-dollar collector cabinets. They make lovely end tables and serve well as small collectible and hobby cabinets.

Description / J&P Coats Reproduction Thread Spool Cabinet
This reproduction cabinet is a Cottage Craft Works exclusive design. It was built as a prototype by Paul Stevens and then sent to one of our Amish craftsmen to make exclusively for us.
We sell this spool cabinet finished in Cherry, Quarter Sawed Oak, or Oak. (Oak is pictured). We also sell the cabinet in a complete kit. The Dark Oak pictured uses St. Michael's Cherry Stain, a popular color for Amish furniture; custom stain colors are available upon request. Select the custom stain option to view our stain chart by clicking here. Note the stain color in the comment section upon checkout.
The spool cabinet is priced in Oak; select wood choices to see the incremental price differences. Most of the original cabinets were made from Oak.
The cabinet is Amish, handcrafted from 3/4" and 1/2" premium hardwoods. No particleboard or pressed board is used in these cabinets. The inside of the cabinet reflects the same attention to detail in its craftsmanship as the beautiful exterior.
The sides are reverse panels, and the interior drawer rail construction mirrors the furniture designs used during these periods. Reverse panels add character and charm to the cabinet. They are very labor-intensive; most furniture builders will use a flat veneer plywood panel or a single recessed panel. These cabinets are built to become tomorrow’s family antique heirlooms.
Our unique design has the thread decals inset into the drawer fronts and covered with Plexiglas to create a framed look. This provides a rich pop against the wood drawer front and is just another example of the attention to detail this beautiful custom spool cabinet offers.
The spool cabinet measures 23-1/2 wide X 17” Deep X 19-1/2 Tall. The cabinet is custom-sized to make a perfect end or side table. The size also allows us to ship these UPS at an oversized rate.
Five drawers with an inside space of 19” Wide X 14” Deep X 2-3/8 Tall make an ideal cabinet for storing magazines, hobbies, collections, and craft items out of the way when company comes to call, or use it in a sewing room to recreate a bit of nostalgia.
Drawers are finished inside as standard furniture drawers for general storage, or add your own fabric or felt based on your hobby or craft needs.
The cabinet comes standard with white Porcelain knobs as pictured. You can replace them with your own knobs. The cabinet used 1-1/2" screws that should work with standard pulls.
Each cabinet or kit is custom handcrafted for each order. Please allow four to eight weeks for oak and six to twelve weeks for quarter-sawn oak or cherry before your cabinet is shipped.
We are pleased to offer this exceptional piece of Amish custom-made furniture at a very reasonable price.
We also sell our J&P Coats Spool Cabinet in a ready-to-assemble, unfinished kit. Click Here for more information.
