White Mountain Ice Cream Freezer Parts, Repair & Restoration Guide

White Mountain Ice Cream Freezers are traditional salt-and-ice ice cream makers with a history extending back to the nineteenth century. Although production and original replacement parts have been discontinued, many vintage White Mountain freezers remain repairable. Cottage Craft Works supplies replacement and compatible components including tub centers, tub ears, tub latches, electric motors, gears, scraper blades and replacement tubs. Certain Immergood parts can be used or adapted for White Mountain freezers, particularly 4- and 6-quart models. Owners should identify and measure their freezer before ordering because White Mountain dimensions varied between models and production periods. When several major components are deteriorated, replacing the complete freezer with a modern Immergood may be more practical than rebuilding the old White Mountain.

White Mountain Ice Cream Freezer Parts, Repair & Restoration Guide

For generations, White Mountain Ice Cream Freezers were among America's best-known traditional ice cream makers. Many vintage 4-quart, 6-quart and 8-quart White Mountain freezers remain in use today, and the basic mechanical design makes many of them worth repairing.

The challenge is finding the correct parts.

White Mountain eventually discontinued production of its traditional ice cream freezers and factory replacement parts. Cottage Craft Works continues to support owners of older White Mountain freezers with replacement parts, repair information, videos and compatible components manufactured for Immergood and other traditional ice cream freezers. Cottage Craft Works currently states that White Mountain freezer and replacement-parts production ended in 2020.

This resource library is designed to help you determine:

A Short History of White Mountain Ice Cream Freezers

The White Mountain name has been associated with traditional ice cream freezers since the nineteenth century. White Mountain's surviving brand history dates its beginnings to 1853, while historical accounts of the White Mountain Freezer Company identify Thomas Sands establishing the company in Laconia, New Hampshire, in 1872. The business later moved to Nashua, New Hampshire.

The traditional White Mountain design became famous for its wooden bucket and multi-motion freezing system. A historical 1916 catalog was already promoting the White Mountain freezer's opposing can and dasher movement and its self-adjusting wooden scraper bars.

White Mountain introduced an electric-powered freezer in 1953, allowing customers to make traditional salt-and-ice ice cream without continuously operating a hand crank.

Ownership changed several times. The company was sold to Alaska Freezer Company in 1963 and acquired by an investor group in 1974, becoming White Mountain Freezer, Inc. The White Mountain brand later became associated with Rival, Holmes, Jarden and ultimately Newell Brands. Jarden acquired Holmes in 2005, and Jarden combined with Newell Rubbermaid in 2016.

Later, White Mountain freezers and components were manufactured overseas, including in China. By 2009–2010, contemporary product reports document China-made White Mountain models. Cottage Craft Works reports that production of White Mountain ice cream freezers and replacement parts ultimately ended in 2020.

That created an important problem for families who still owned perfectly serviceable White Mountain freezers:

Where do you find replacement White Mountain Ice Cream Freezer parts after the manufacturer stops making them?

That is where the relationship between White Mountain, Immergood and Cottage Craft Works becomes important.

White Mountain and Immergood Replacement Parts

The traditional White Mountain design did not disappear simply because factory parts became difficult to obtain.

Immergood developed a modern heavy-duty ice cream freezer based on the same general traditional salt-and-ice freezer concept while addressing many of the corrosion and durability problems found on older machines.

Because of similarities in dimensions and operating design, certain Immergood components can be used directly or adapted for White Mountain freezers—especially many 4- and 6-quart machines.

Cottage Craft Works currently supplies several examples:

The Immergood/White Mountain Delrin tub center replaces the original cast-iron center on White Mountain 4- and 6-quart freezers.

Immergood stainless-steel tub ears can replace White Mountain tub ears across White Mountain freezer sizes.

Replacement stainless tub latches are also available for White Mountain freezers.

Immergood Delrin dasher scraper blades can be adapted to White Mountain dashers. The 6-quart application requires drilling the appropriate mounting holes, while adapting a 4-quart White Mountain requires modifying a 6-quart Immergood scraper.

Perhaps most importantly, Cottage Craft Works offers replacement motor options. The Immergood electric freezer head can replace many White Mountain 4- and 6-quart electric heads when the freezer has the appropriate approximately 11-5/8-inch tub diameter, although some later configurations require modification or replacement of the tub ear and latch. It does not directly replace the old White Mountain 8-quart head.

This compatibility can allow an older White Mountain freezer to remain useful long after original factory parts have disappeared.
