Your Mower Is a Precision Cutting Tool

A reel mower may look mechanically simple, but the cutting system depends upon close alignment.

Before mowing, inspect the mower for shipping damage, loose hardware, proper wheel operation, and free reel movement.

Having an oily residue on the parts is a good sign and does not indicate damage to the housing. Lubricant is sprayed on the bare metal reel blades and bed knife before shipping to protect them from rusting.

Install the Handle

Assemble the handle according to the manufacturer's instructions and confirm all fasteners are secure.

Don't modify the handle or frame in ways that could interfere with normal mower operation.

Check Wheel and Reel Movement

With appropriate hand protection and keeping fingers away from the cutting area, confirm that the wheels and drive system operate correctly.

The reel should rotate consistently as designed when the mower travels forward.

Set Your Cutting Height

Select the appropriate lawn height rather than immediately choosing the lowest available option.

Trying to remove too much grass in a single pass makes mowing more difficult.

The axle wheel nut will need to be loosened each time to make height adjustments and then tightened back down. This is important because the gearing is manufactured in the back of the wheel, which then turns the pinion gear on the reel shaft. If the wheel is left loose, it will ride at an angle on the pinion gear, causing premature wear on both.

Check the Cut

A paper-cut test at several locations across the bed knife provides a useful indication of adjustment and sharpness.

If the mower cuts cleanly across the width, it should be ready for lawn testing.

If not, follow the manufacturer's adjustment procedure before mowing.

Make a Test Pass

Use a small section of maintained grass for the first test.

Look behind the mower.

The grass should have a relatively uniform appearance without obvious strips of uncut grass.
