Description / Maytag Wringer Washer Retro Butter Churn

In the 1930s, times were hard. Families had to scrape to get by, and many were faced with doing without the basics, including food and shoes. At that time, a washing machine would have been considered a big-ticket luxury item that families just could not afford.

The Rural Electrification Act of 1936 also began to bring electricity to rural families, beginning their quest to improve daily living by replacing manually operated appliances.

The Maytag Corporation offered accessories to their wringer washing machines to entice families to justify the purchase by being able to multitask their homestead chores with one electrically operated machine.

The butter churn was one of the accessories they offered. Although our Amish reproduction butter churn is not even close to the massive original butter churn that Maytag offered. In today’s dollars, the original butter churn would probably cost several hundred dollars. It was difficult to clean, and it was limited to only the E-model square tub machines.

Our Amish version, consisting of a hard plastic box made to hold a two-quart Mason Jar, is simple and much easier to use. It works on all the Maytag E, J, and N Wringer Washing Machines. Just remove the agitator, slide the box on the shaft, fill your Wide Mouth Mason jar with room temperature cream, and turn on the washing machine and watch magic happen. These churns make butter 50% quicker than a traditional hand-crank churn.

The back-and-forth rocking motion will make butter in about 10-15 minutes.  Their use of the Wide Mouth Mason Jars is ingenious, making them easy to clean and sanitize. Like the Amish, it is simple, and they are easy to source for spares if you want to make butter and store it in a jar.

You must use the Mason brand 2-qt jar.

We sell the unit with and without the jars, as most modern home canning uses the 1-qt Mason Jars and may not have 2-qt jars. They are readily available online.

Units are available as a single Mason Jar to make up to 2 quarts or a double Mason Jar to make up to 4 quarts at a time.

On the double unit, if you don’t want to make a double batch, you will need to fill the opposite side with water to balance the unit.

The unit is priced as a single model without a jar. Select the models with or without jars using customized options, and the price will incrementally increase from the single model without a jar.

Please allow 2-3 weeks to ship.

Please note that these are made only for Maytag old-time wringer washing machines models E, J, and N. The butter churns will not fit other wringer washer machines, and they will not fit modern spin washing machines.
