Buggy, Carriage, Surrey, Wagon, Axles
USA Amish manufactured buggy and carriage axles for Pennsylvania-style Amish buggies, carriages, Surrey, and wagons. Straight or drop axles are available in standard 1” x 68” for long style standard hubs and 1" x 64" short spindle hub wagon wheels used to build or replace axles on horse-drawn 4 and two-wheel vehicles
Rear drop axles have a 1-5/8" drop for rear leaf spring mounting and the front drop axles have a 3-1/2" drop for the fifth wheel & leaf spring mounting.
Indiana, Ohio, and Pennsylvania carriage builders generally use the same hub and bearings to stay consistent for repair parts. Before ordering to fit your wheels check the axle spindle size, Timken bearings, and seal numbers below to be sure yours are the same. We also carry the wheels.

The Indiana, Ohio and Pennsylvania Amish carriage makers mainly stay universal with the running gear, check the spindle size and bearing numbers below if you plan to use these axles with different wheels.
The short spindles are popular as they do not stick out as far as the standard long spindles thus, they provide more clearance through barn doors, fence posts, and are easier on the kneecaps and legs when walking around the buggies. The shorter spindle hubs are accomplished by moving the rear and front bearings closer together. The tradeoff is that the wheel hubs are a bit less supported for larger wagons and heavier loads than having a wider standard hub. You will need to use wheels with short spindle hubs on the short spindle axles and vice versa for the long spindle hubs.
Axles will have a black powder-coated finish. Either size axle will measure 60" center to center of the installed wheels.
Optional bearings and seal kit #542-021 include #541 rear large 1” I.D. roller bearing 07093, #542 1” I.D. small outer roller bearing A6075, #573-1 1” I.D. x 2” O.D. Oil Seal, #531 Axle Washer, and #554 Cotter Pin.
