How the 401 Hydrant Works

The stainless-steel valve assembly is located at the bottom of the standpipe, below the frost line. As the top lever is opened, the internal stainless-steel rod lifts, opening the valve and allowing water to flow upward.
When shut off, the hydrant automatically drains: water in the standpipe flows back down into the gravel or sand bed surrounding the valve, preventing freezing and eliminating standing water.

Important installation note: The valve base must remain below the freeze zone and be surrounded by gravel or sand to ensure proper drainage. This prevents frost damage and ensures true freeze protection.
