The old Maytag wringer washers were so well made that people are still using them for weekly home laundry. Since they clean so well many are using them in the workplace to clean rags, chamois, uniforms, etc. Some have even abandoned their modern-day automatic washers and are scouring antique stores and thrift shops looking for one of these old laundry machines just because of the short life span and replacement cost of a new set of machines.
The wringers have the most moving parts and often are either missing entirely or are in such bad shape they are more economical to replace.
The Amish use the old wringer washers for their off-grid self-sufficient lifestyle converting them to a gas engines or air-powered motors. As they scour the countryside for more washing machines to supply growing Amish families, they often find units that have tubs that are rusted through, so they rescue and rebuild the wringer heads.
Several companies made wringer washing machines, but Maytag was the most popular and still is today in the Amish communities.
